MAAM MEMBER PROFILE

Nasim Alikhani: "I was not very clear about my reasons for doing the marathon but I knew that at this point of my life, I needed something to hang onto. Last year was a very challenging year for me on many fronts and every time that the pressure built up I would put on my sneakers and go for a run and somehow things always looked better when I got back."

Run for MAAM. Run for motherhood.

Why run for MAAM? We follow up.

Mothers Across America is a non-profit running organization dedicated to improving the emotional and physical health of mothers. MAAM promotes running to lower depression during motherhood and foster positive self-image for mothers and children through goal setting and team sports participation.

Mothers who neglect their health aren’t only hurting themselves. Physically inactive mothers often have physically inactive children. Children who do not exercise are at elevated risk for physical and mental health problems and are more likely to engage in risky behavior such as smoking, drinking, and early sexual activity.

Depression during motherhood is a growing epidemic due to lack of awareness, support and prevention. Every year up to 50,000 women in New York State alone will experience depression related to childbearing. 1-2 in 1000 are at risk of developing postpartum psychosis, the most severe level of postpartum depression. This puts them in danger of killing themselves or their children.

MAAM brings mothers together in a team setting that invites honesty about the physical and psychological stresses of motherhood not generally discussed in the open. These may include feelings of inadequacy or anxiety, decreased body image due to weight gain, guilt about feeling depressed, or regrets about not having as much time as desired for children or career.

Our original team is still running today and closer than ever.
